Danthi Lab, Department of Biology, Indiana University
TEACHING
M430 VIROLOGY
Instructor: Pranav Danthi
Schedule: MWF at 12.20 pm each Spring semester (16 weeks, 48 lectures)
Requirements: Molecular Biology L211 or S211. Cell biology L312 and Genetics L311 are recommended.
Course organization: This course is divided into two parts. Each part also includes reading and discussion of primary scientific literature on viruses in the news (eg. Ebola, Influenza and SARS-CoV2)
Part I: (Lectures 1-26) Molecular Virology: This portion of the course is designed to gain an understanding of the key steps in viral infection that allow successful completion of the infectious cycle in the host.
Part II: (Lectures 27-43) Pathogenesis and Control: In this part of the course, how this tug-o-war between the virus and the host modulates the outcome of disease will be discussed. How antiviral molecules and vaccines can alter viral disease and how viruses evolve against selective pressure also will be addressed.
M541 VIROLOGY AND HOST RESPONSE
Instructor: Pranav Danthi (for the host response section)
Schedule: TBA each Spring Semester (15-16 lectures total)
Requirements: This course is required for Microbiology graduate students. Graduate students in other programs may also enroll in this course toward their minor or elective credits.
Course organization: This course is taught through reading and discussion of primary literature (both classical and contemporary) and recent review articles. The course focuses on cell intrinsic and innate immune responses that limit virus infection. Viral strategies to overcome the antiviral effects of these responses are also discussed.
